BACKHAUS SEASON.
OPENING NEXT MONTH. The return of Wilhelm Backhaus is an event of the first importance in the musical history of New Zealand. Recollections of the artistry displayed on the occasion of his first visit in 1926 arc mingled with a knowledge of his more recent achievements in England and on tho Continent. Backhaus is recognised throughout the musical world as ono of tho greatest pianists of the present century and the greatest living exponent of Beothoven. Mr. E. J. Gravostock, who is directing tho Australian and New Zealand tour of tho world-famous pianist, announces that Backhaus will open his Auckland season at tho Town If all on Thursday, July 3, and will also give recitals on Saturday," July 5, and Monday, July 7. Since he was last heard in Auckland, Backhaus lias added to tho lustre of his reputation by performing tho prodigious feat of memorising tho entire 32 sonatas of Beethoven, and the series of recitals in Vienna, Faris, and other European capitals at which these sonatas were played by Backhaus were t:old out many days in advance. Tho box plans for tho three concerts will open on Monday, Juno 30.
