Sir. —I read with surprise "Another) Torn Tyre's " letter regarding the 'state of some portions of the Takapuna roads* Truly, the selfishness and grasping prow pensities of a minority of motorists is sufficient to cause alarm to the averaga ratepayer. If the motorist wants perfect) roads everybody will be pleased to sea him get them—as long as he is prepared to pay for them, but to ask the non* motorist to help him pay his tyre bill is beyond a joke. The suggestions of pre- 1 vious correspondents that thci petrol tasj be increased to supply the demands of the motorist is surely in accordance with' the principle that " the user should pay."' Referring to " Another Torn Tyre's " marks about Bayswater improvements, 3l wish to point out that, during the pasii twelve years, for the thousands of pounda that Bayswater ratepayers haVe paid in rates, they have received only hundreds of pounds in value. Hence, if aj small body of residents (much smaller' than it should bo, I admit) are game enough to give up six Saturday after* noons, and their labour, to help clean! up and beautify some of the untidy corners left by the mismanagement of earlier" councils, surely the present council is doing only a fair thing in expending some of the rates money to assist them in their endeavours. If Bayswater had received fairer treatment in the past, ita residents would have supported previous endeavours to complete the gaps comi plained of by "Another Torn Tyre." Bayswater.
