ESTIMATES ,FOR THE YEAR.
AN IMPROVED POSITION.

The Cambridge Borough Council met last evening, when the treasurer presented the estimates for the new financial year. The council is budgeting for total receipts of £17,732, against £18,201 last year. The estimated expenditure is £17,677, leaving an estimated credit balance of £55.
The council has improved its finances considerably during the last two years. At the beginning of last year the council was faced with a debit of £BOO. Of this amount £soo' was paid off last year. It is expected to pay off the remaining £3OO this year, without increasing the rates. The rates to be struck are:—General and special, 4^d; water, 2£d: 1 l-8d for unoccupied lands; £2 per annum for tha sauitary service.
