The final series of matches in the first round of. the Auckland Rugby Union's pernor competition will be played on Saturday. Tho principal attraction at, Eden Park will be the game between Ponsonby nnd 'Technical Old Boys, which teams aro first and second respectively on the ohompionship tablo. A fast game should result,, but on form the chances of Ponsonby aro strongly favoured, although it will bo without tho services of Lucaa and McWilliams, who aro playing in the first test. A curtainraiser will be played between University and City. The former is au improving combination and should not experience great difficulty in winning. Tho.other match set down at Eden Park 5s on the No. 2 ground at three o'clock between Grammar and Grafton and prospects favour the former. An even game should result between Marist and College Rifles at -tho Show Grounds ond Manukau will prove a strong opposition for Training College at Onehunga. The suggested cancellation of this eoason'a North Island tour of A Thames Valley representative team was strongly opposed at last evening's meeting of the To Arolia Busby Union. In a lotlcr the Thames Valley Rugby Union stated that the financial positions of tho Waihi, Paeroa and Hauraki Plains unions would not stand tho strain of the necessary contributions. Moreover, there was scarcely a man in these three districts worthy of selection Dr. W. R. Lawrence, president of the Thames Valley Union, said the union's delegato to the New Zealand Union had compromised tho Valley union by arranging a tour and failing to secure'the necessary financial guarantees from the centres where matches had been arranged. •It was decided to inform tho Valley' union that the To Aroha Union, was anxioUs that tho tour should proceed and that it was prepared to guarantee its share of the cost. It was decided to offer tho Haurald Plains Union a match at To Aroha on July 12 The Waihi Union askod for a visit from a third grade team on July 28. The request was granted, conditional on the Wailii Union sending a third grade team to Te Aroha on the Poland Cup fixture date.
