THE VETERANS' HOME.
SYSTEM OF CONTROL*
NO CHANCE DESIRED,
The continuation of the Veterans' Homo under its present constitution was strongly advocated by the vice-chairman of the Auckland Provincial Patriotic and War Relief Association, Mr. V. J. Larner, in his address at the annual meeting yesterday, The home was founded by tho Earl of Ranfurly in 1903 and came under the control of the Patriotic Association in 1921.
"The commissioners who reported recently npon the position of physically and economically incapacitated soldiers appear to favour rest homos rather than veterans' homes such as ours," said Mr. Larner. "Wo, however, consider the continuance of our institution absolutely necessary." Reviewing the history of the home, Mr. Larner said that before 3921 it had been controlled by a committee with the assistance of donations and grants from the Government, the latter varying from £SOO between 1914 and 1918 to £750 for 1919 and 1920, when, except for two small grants of £2OO and £3OO, the State aid ceased. In the past year the association voted £15,000 to form a capital fund to make the homo self-supporting. The home was capable of housing 42 men, or, with a moderate expenditure, 67. At present the number accommodated was 26, of whom 9 saw servico in the Groat War. Mr. Larner said a word of warm commendation was due to the excellent management of the home and the sympathetic care of the pensioners under tho regime of Major Wallingford.
