"TIPPING" AT RACES.
ARREST OF TWO MEN.
IDLE AND DISORDERLY CHARGE
" These two men have been tipping on racecourses here; they pick up 'mugs' and tell them what to back," said ChiefDetective Hammond, when two labourers, John Richard Anderson, aged 24. and Alexander Wallace Copley, aged 30, were charged in the Polico Court yesterday with being idle and disorderly. It was alleged that Anderson habitually consorted with undesirables, while Copley possessed insufficient lawful means of sup. port. Both men pleaded guilty.
The chief detective said tho men had been following race-meetings round tho country, and neither did any work. They had como to Auckland for tho Juno meeting, and would then move on to other races. Copley bad a long list of previous convictions, including idlo and disorderly charges, drunkenness, theft and trespassing on racecourses. Anderson had been convicted in Duuedin for being idle and disorderly, and had been ordered to come up for sentence if called on within a year, in addition to being prohibited.
Each accused was sentenced to threo months' imprisonment by tho magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt.
