FUND FROM WELLINGTON. GREAT NEED OF MONEY. [BT TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.! "WELLINGTON, Friday. The president of tho New Zealand branch of tho British Enipir© cancGr cam* paign, Dr. J. S. Elliott, stated to-day that tho campaign for raising funds by tho Wellington division of tho organisation will commence.on August 1. lhe campaign in Wellington had been delayed for various reasons, chiefly so as not to inteifere with tho raising of funds for other worthy purposes. The Otago-Southland division has £15,500 iu hand so far. Tho Canterbury division has collected already £12,000. The medical research committee of the campaign considers that a sum of £40,000 has to bo set aside to maintain tho cancer research in connection with Otago University. No doubt the Wellington provincial district will generously contribute its proportion of tho capital sum required. Tho object of the campaign, said Dr. Elliott, was not only to enable New Zealand to do its fair sliaro of research into the cancer problem. There was much other work to bo done. 'lho radium and deep ray departments needed to be kept on a standardised grade of high efficiency. In each centre judicious publicity work was required. There was the maintenance of special cancer clinics for the treatment of rich and poor alike, and tho provision of sufficient radium wliero necessary in approved centres. Valuable data in New Zealand was at present being collected, with tho assistance of tho Government.
