TAXI FARE NOT PAID.
PROSECUTION OF LABOURER
"This man was on relief work and yet hired a taxi," said Mr. F. K. Hunt, S.M., in (he Police Court yesterday when Hugh Hradlev, aged 56, a labourer, was charged with obtaining by fraud credit to the amount of 10s 6d from a taxi-driver, Frank Laver. Mr. Smyth, who represented accused, entered a plea of not guilty.
Frank Laver said that accused hired his taxi at the railway station entrance on Tuesday and asked to be driven to .Napier Street. He was I hen driven back tu town and finally to Napier Street, again. JTo said he would get the money and went into a house in Napier Street, but came out and said he did not. have the money to pay for Iho hire of the taxi. Witness then drove accused to town and gave him in charge. Sir. Smyth said that accused had depended on his wifo to pay for the taxi, but she would not give him the money. Accused was employed on relief works and had two weeks' wages due to him.
Accused was lined CI and costs. Ho was given seven days in which to pay his tine.
