ALLEGED DUMPING.
GOODS FROM AUSTRALIA.
LACK OF ACTUAL CASES
[BY* TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. ]
WELLES GTOJS'. Wednesday,
The complaints by some members of tho Dunedin Chamber of Commerce that Australian exporters were dumping goods on the New Zealand market were the subject
of inquiries to-day. Tho general opinion among merchants and manufacturers was that there was little in the allegations. Lack of specific information and confidence in tho Customs Department seemed to guide several of those interviewed, in their opinion that tho allegations from Dunedin were without foundation. ' As one merchant pointed out the discussion at Dunedin lapsed when one of those making tho complaints was asked for specific instances. The president of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce, Mr. D. J. McGowan, said that as far as he knew there had been no dumping to any great extent. It was necessary under tho present Act, in tho caso of all imported goods, for tho valuo in Australia and also the valuo in tho country of origin to bo declared before they were assessed by the New Zealand customs. This meant that not only were goods manufactured in Australia carefully watched, but also goods manufactured in Europo or America and sent to New Zealand through Australia. This, of course, would stop any largo amount of dumping. " We are fully alivo to the possibilities of dumping," said Mr. E. Campbell, tho president of tho Manufacturers' Association, to-day. "Wo have had complaints along certain lines from time to time, but. we have found that the people who make these complaints aro unable to quote concrete instances."
