MATRICULATION TEST.

Sir,—Mr. W. Eraser, president of the New Zealand Technical School Teachers' Association, in commenting on the matriculation test us "illusionary hallmark "< "time and effort wasted," has taken'a bold step that merits; the thanks of every parent in the country. The matriculation test as an entrance to the university 13 one thing, hut that it can be used by unions and associations to v rpar the future of all New Zealand youths who do not pass it, is a brake on the progress of the country and the ruination of the future of the majority of the New Zealand youth. Such an abuse has been made of this examination that the Government is now alivo to the evil, and promises drastic changes in the educational system. Reform in education is long overdue. Every day youths have their futures blasted just because they fail to pass this examination. The Minister has assured us that ''not a minute is being wasted," and it is sincerely to be hoped that the reform contemplated has for its object the realisation of a scheme that will enable every youth to become skilled in a craft with the minimum of time and expense—whichneedless to point out, is a complete "reversal of the present distressful and absurd system. Let our Government adopt, the slogan "Every New Zealand born a skilled worker," and it. will do more fon the country than any other.Government? fias ever accomplished.

Harold Schmidt.
