TRAMS IN ONEHUNGA.

DUPLICATION OF LINE,

WORK TO START SHORTLY.

TRANSPORT BOARD'S DECISION

An announcement that an early start would bo made to duplicate the tramlines at tho ( southern end of Onchunga was made at a meeting of the Transport Board yesterday. The work will be proceeded with sooner than was expected owing to the fact that the Railway Department is not ready for the construction of tho railway station loop.

Reporting to the board, the manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, stated that the Remucra extension would bo ready for use on July 8, and its approaching completion would release 40 men next week. It had been intended to transfer them to the station loop, but the Railway Department's work was not sufficiently forward to permit that being done. The only alternative to putting the men off was to proceed with tho Onchunga duplication, which would carry them on to the beginning of July, when it was hoped to transfer them to the station loop. Mr. E. IT. Potter asked when a start would bo made with the proposed extension at Mount Eden.

Mr. Ford said it was proposed to proceed with Mount Eden and also the Richmond Road extension as soon as possible, probably after the completion of the railway station loop. Tho plans for the work at Richmond Road would be ready in three weeks.

Mr. E. Morton said a number of unemployed men in Onchunga would bo glad to get work on the duplication job.

"There is not a chance of putting on another man," interposed the manager. "We have all we require."

Mr. J. Wood complimented the board's engineers and workmen and the contractors doing the excavations on the Point Chevalier extension. Tho tracks to the beach were well toward completion, and reflected credit on all concerned in their construction, he said.
