APPLICATION REJECTED.
PROPOSED TE KUITI LOAN.
COUNCIL NOT SATISFIED.
[BY TELEGRAM.—OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TE KUITI. Tuesday.
The Local Government Loans Board recently replied to tlio To Kuiti Borough Council's application for sanction to raise a loan for streets improvements, stating that the board declined, as it was of opinion that the rates should not be increased while the present financial conditions obtained.
At a meeting of the council last evening, Mr. Low voiced the opinion that tho reason given was ono that called for further consideration. Ho Said other towns of tho size of Te Kuiti had been able to secure loans and a small town like this could not hope to develop unless money was obtainable from outside sources. Tho borough rates had come in well this year, though detracting factors were 110 doubt the position in regard to Crown lands in the borough and native rates.
Mr. Low said 110 considered too much publicity had been given to thoso happenings and to facts connected with tho town which were not of a nature calculated to be the best advertisement.
The Mayor, Mr. W. J. Broad foot: IHo native rating question has been taken up and there is legislation before the House in the direction of allowing tho Crown to sell at a reduced value. Mr. Blackmail: I think, with Mr. Low, that there has been an outcry on matters from this placo about which there should not be so much voiced. It was decided that the Loans Board should be written to and asked the reason why it had rejected the council's application.
