TRAM STOP REMOVED.

SURREY CRESCENT CHANGE.

PROTEST BY RESIDENTS. A deputation of Grey Lynn residents waited on the Transport Board yesterday with a request that the Surrey Crescent tram stop, recently removed a distance of 75 yards nearer the junction of the new tram tracks to Point Chevalier, be restored. "The stop has been so placed as to cause inconvenience to a majority of the residents," said their spokesman, Mr. J. Dempsey, "and it is a hardship 'to the people who have built up businesses there." The acting-chairman, Mr. G. Baildon, said the stop had been changed because the Pubilc Works Department required all trams to stop before taking the automatic points, and an instruction to that effect was incorporated in the Order-in-Council relating to the Point Chevalier line. "I do not know what we can do for you," he told the deputation. "We do not- like to disturb the business centres, but it sometimes has to be done, as in the case of Dominion Road. However, we will give careful consideration to what you have said." When the deputation withdrew, Mr. E. J. rhelan said there was only one thing to do and that was to restore the old stop and retain the new one, too. Mr. M. J. Coyle said that two stops only 75 yards apart would not assist the management to speed up the , service, which was what was desired. If the request were granted in this case privileges would be asked for in other parts of the city, and the trams would get slower and slower. The manager, Mr. A. E. Ford, said it was imperative that the trams should stop before crossing the automatic points, which had to be set correctly if'accidents were to be avoided. By coming to <1 stop the motorman was able to see whether tho 1 points wore correct before negotiating them. , Tho board's officers were asked to propare a report.
