CIVIC THEATRE

The British all-talking film "Atlantic," which is being shown • at tho Civic Theatre, is an impressive version of tho incidents attending the loss of the liner Titanic when it struck an iceberg in 1912. Built about this event is a study of human emotions in the face of a great catastrophe and certain death. The characters of men and women stand revealed in their' true guise when news that the ship is sinking and has only three hours to live spreads among the passengers. Scenes of emotional intensity treated with restraint make the picture a triumph of the British film-industry. John Longden, Franklin Dyall and Arthur Hardy have prominent parts. An adaptation of. Shakespeare's "Taming of the Shrew,"? with Mary I'ickford and Douglas Fair-A' banks in the loading roles, will commence' a season next Saturday.

ST. JAMES' THEATRE

Tho difficulties in which a musical comedy company finds itself provide the theme of "On With tho Show," the Warner Brothers' production which is showing for an extended season at St. .lames' Theatre. A feature of the picture is its complete screening in the.technicolour process by means of which full justice can be given to the numerous revue scenes with large choruses and accomplished dancing. Betty Compson lias tho leading role and subordinate parts are played by Arthur Lake, Sally O'N'eil. Joe E. Brown and Louiso Fazenda. The story of the purchaso of the Suez Canal forms tho basis of "Disraeli," tho principal picture of the change of programme at St. James' Theatre on Friday. The part of Disraeli is taken by George Arliss, who is well supported by Joan Bennett, Florence Arliss and David Torrance.

MAJESTIC THEATRE,

Tho screen version of a play by Sir J. M. Barrio, "Seven Days' Leave," is now being shown for a short return season at the Majestic Theatre. The picturo deals with a London charwoman, who boasts dining tho war of the deeds of a non-existent soldier son. Tho complications that ensue form tho basis of a novel plot, with an appealing undercurrent of pathos. An additional feature is"Dangerous Paradise," a romantic story with a South Sea setting. Nancy Carroll has the leading role. On Friday a doublefeature programme will be shown. Ilal Skelly, who will bo remembered for his work in "The Dance of Life" and "Woman Trap," has "a suitable role in "Men Are Like That," a Paramount picture, dealing with the adventures of a blustering railway clerk. " Dark Streets." the other picture, is a story of criminal life,' in which Jack Mulhall and Lila Lee appear.

STRAND THEATRE,

Irene Bordoni has the leading role in "Paris," which is showing for its final week at the Strand Theatre. The story deals with a Puritan American mother who goes to Paris to prevent the marriage of her son to a French actress. Her reactions to Parisian life provide numerous amusing complications and culminate in her engagement to the actress' leading man. Several songs are introduced into the production and the revue scenes are produced with lavish displays in colour photography. A full supporting programme is also shown. "Footlights and Fools," with Colleen Moore in the principal part, will head tho next change of programme.

ROXY THEATRE

Hoot Gibson and Eugenia Gilbert plav the leading parts in " Court-in' Wildcats," an all-talking comedy which will com-V monce at the Roxy Theatre Hoot Gibson has tho part of a collegfe* boy who poses as a weakling to escape from work in the family foundry. He becomes attached to a wild west show and starts on the arduous task of courting " Calamity June," a comely but man hating performer. Tho courtship provides many thrills and laughs. In addition, " Cameo Kirby," a musical romance of New . Orleans in which Harold Murray and Norma Tcrris play the leading parts, will be screened. This picture is a romantic musical drama of tho Mississippi River •boat days. The story is set in New Orleans at Mardi Gras timo and the hero is a professional gambler who plied his trade on the river boats. There are several excellent songs, including " Romance," " After a Million Dreams," " Home is Heaven," "Tankard and Bowl" and " I'm a Peaceful Man." The supporting programme includes a Fox Movieton Romantic.

REGENT THEATRE

"The Trial of Mary Dugan," the screen version of the well-known play of the same name, is now being shown at the Regent Theatre. The whole action of tlie piece takes place in a courtroom, where a fascinating woman is on trial for the murder of her lover. All (he tenseness of mind and emotion that, are common to such a place are reproduced in the film, which grips the audience from the opening address by counsel to the final verdict by the jury. Norma Shearer appears to advantage in the leading role, and sho is supported by 11. B. Warner and Lewis Stone. The supporting features include an item by "The Happiness Boys," a song by Jack Davey, "After My Laughter Came Tears," and selected items by Mr. Whiteford Waugh's orchestra.

RIALTO THEATRE

Some exciting episodes have been introduced into " The Sky Hawk," tho main feature of the current programme at tho Ttinlto Theatre. A feature of the film is a duel in the air between a British aviator and a German Zeppelin, which is represented with vivid accuracy. John Garrick has the leading * role. "Maya the Bee," a novel nature film, is also shown.

TUDOR THEATRE

The ''/iegfeld Follies," who aro well known for the effectiveness and elaborate skill of tho productions in which they appear, have the principal roles in "Glorifying the American Girl," which is now being shown at the Tudor Theatre. To-morrow "Tho Love Parade" will comruenco a season at tho theatre.

WEST END THEATRE

A thrilling mystery story is unfolded in "The Mysterious Dr. Fu Manchu," which is being screened at (he West End Theatre. The new programme, which commences on Thursday, will have "The Love Parado" as its principal attraction.
