THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE.

QUIET CONDITIONS PREVAIL

Quiet conditions prevailed on the Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday. '1 ho volume of business was a little below average but, with the exception of one instance, price-levels were firmer. Iho demand for gilt-edged investments was still very keen and War Bonds, 1938, 4.> per cent., had sale 7s 6d dearer at £93 ss. Business was quiet in banks, but there was a trend toward a firmer basis. Offers were stronger for both Australians of Commerco and Commercials of Australia, tho latter being in demand 8d better than.on Saturday at 20s 9d. The now issuo fully paid changed hands at 20s lid, «i rise of 4id. Nationals of Australasia moved up 3s 6d on the hist deal a month ago and were done at £.14 17s, the ono transaction satisfying the demand. New Zealnnds were sought 3d firmer at 57s 9d. In insurance a late sale on Saturday of New Zealands was recorded at the current price, 43s 6d. Steady, inquiry was maintained for Auckland Gas and the ordinary issue were dealt in at the unchanged price of 23s lOd without further response from sellers. In shipping a rise of 6d was registered by Huddart-Parkers, which were done at 37s 6d, after which offers for more firmed from 35s 6d to 36s 6d. Timbers wero neglected by buyers with tho exception of Kauris, which were obtained 3d cheaper at 13s. Inquiry was firm for breweries. Offers for New Zealands advanced 9d to 51s 9d and Tooths were vainly sought at 31s. General investments were quiet. Further headway was rnado by Wilsons Cements, which were wanted at 41s 6d, compared with Saturday's offers of 40s. Sellers remained unresponsive. In mining Mount Lyells moved favourably for tho first time since Easter and recovered Is 9d with salo at 28s 3d. Offers opened at the first call at 265, to which sellers did not quote. Waihis were unchanged.
