MOTORISTS IN COURT,

INTOXICATION ALLEGED.

FATALITY AT KAIAPOI

A seqiiel to a fatal accident at Kaiapoi on April 23 was heard in the Magistrate's Court to-day, before Mr. H. A. "ioung, S.M., when William Albert Parsons, driver of a motor-car which knocked down a cyclist, Henry Gilbert Handcock, was committed to tho Supreme Court for trial on a charge of driving negligently so as to cause the death of Handcock. On a charge of being drunk while in charge of a car Parsons was remanded until August 25.

Constable Holmes, who interviewed accused and took him to tho police station, said Parsons told -him ho left Christchurch at 5 o'clock and arrived at Kaiapoi at 5.45 p.m., and had two drinks of whisky. Prior to leaving Christchurch he had two drinks of whisky. Regarding the accident, accused first said the cyclist was coining toward him on tho wrong sido of the road, 'but later said tho cyclist was going in tho samo direction as himself but on the wrong sido of the road. Witness said accused told him tho cyclist was right in front of him and all he could do was to knock him down, 110 also said ho was travelling at 30 miles an hour. Witness' found accused so confused and contradictory that ho did not proceed with his efforts to take a statement from him. 110 was obviously intoxicated. The doctor told accused that ho had had too much to drink a<nd was not in a fit' stato to drive. Witness said ho tested accused's car, which had good lamps and a good footbrake. Tho distance from tho point of impact to whore tho body lay was 19ft. It was 93ft. to where the • bicycle was. From tests witness made it was possible to see a cyclist in dark clothes at a distance of 240 ft.

MARRIED WOMAN'S FATE.

LORRY DRIVER CHARGED. [BX TELEGRAPH. —PRESS ASSOCIATION. ] NAPIER, Monday. A charge of being intoxicated while in charge of a motor vehicle and, by an act of omission in relation thereto, causing the death of Mary Kingsland, was preferred against Reginald Frank Hunt, who appeared before Mr. A. M. Mowlem, S.M., in the Napier Magistrate's Court today. The charge arose out of tho death of Mrs. Kingsland on Saturday, as a result of being knocked off her bicycle and run ove; by a lorry driven by accused. On the application of the police a remand was granted until Thursday, bail being allowed in self, £SOO, and two sure* tics of £250 each.
