Now Plymouth again suffered from a breakdown in the electric-power supply this evening, tho causo not being any lack of water, but the blowing out of a transformer on the newly reticulated section in tho borough. This affected the switchboard at the sub-station, and the town suffered from a serious shortage of power from 5.50 p.m. until 9 p.m., when repairs were effected and tho full power switched on. Tho breakdown interfered greatly with business on tho late night, and when the light failed on the first occasion candles were hastily requisitioned by shopkeepers. For the first hour lights were off and on at short intervals, but by switching off tho street lights and the community lighting system and stopping tho tramways a very dim but steady light was provided for shoppers.
Buses, both private and municipal, were brought into service to handle tho late night traffic, and the dark streets were almost as busy as usual. The picture theatres were delayed considerably in starting their programmes, while largo consumers of power were also inconvenienced.
