NEARLY MISSED STEAMER.
WOMAN WITHOUT TICKET.
A woman with two children nearly missed the Union Company's steamer Makura, which left Auckland for Sydney yesterday afternoon. The woman reached the wharf with the children long, before sailing time, but was unable to go on board the steamer because her husbnnd, who had the tickets, had not arrived. The vessel was scheduled to sail at threo o'clock and toward sailing time the husband had not appeared. Fortunately, the Makura did not sail on schedule, but as preparations were being made for the vessel to depart the woman tearfully pleaded to tho officials to delay the departure longer. That could not be done and preparations were made to bring tho woman's luggago ashore. At 3.10 p.m., however, the husband reached the gangway and gave his wife the tickets. He was only juSt in time and a fow minutes later the gangway was lowered and the Makura left the wharf.
