BETS TAKEN BY DETECTIVES. TELEPHONES AND WIRELESS. A fine of £IOO, or three months' imprisonment, was imposed on David Guthrie Caldwell, aged 39, who was charged in the Police Court yesterday with conducting a common gaming house at 41, Paico Avenue. Mr. Moody entered a plea of guilty on behalf of accused. Detective-Sergeant Kelly said accused had been arrested by Detective-Sergeant McHugh and Detective Nalder at 11 a.m. on Saturday. Ho had two telephones and a wireless set for the purpose of betting. Accused was not at the house when the detectives arrived and they took 22 bets in his absence. He was apparently well known and was carrying on business on a fairly largo scale.
Mr. Moody said accused, who was an engineer, was in ill-health, lie not tho type of man who frequented hotels and had always paid his way. "He is not squealing, as he realises it was a fair catch on Saturday," counsel added. ",l will try to be as consistent as 1 can," said the magistrate, Mr. F. K. Hunt, in imposing the fine. Accused was allowed 24 hours to pay.
