OPENING OF THE SEASON/ SENIOR CHAMPIONSHIP GAMES. SOMERVILLE'S NARROW WIN.. Ilio Auckland Hockey Association was favoured with perfect weather for llio opening of its season 011 Saturday. There, aro seven senior teams competing, and the first byo went to Mount Eden. Two of tlio senior games were played at liemuera, and 0110 on an excellent ground the association lias secured at Walker Park, Point Cliovalicr. It was on this ground that Somerville met the promoted Wesley team and secured a victory by one goal, scored at the very end of the game. St. Luke's, with most of last year's players showing good form, had little difficulty in defeating University Whippets, most of whom were making their first appearance in senior grade. University A gave an attractive exhibition against North Shore which was ablo always to keep tho game even and interesting. Following are tho results of the senior matches:— Somerville, 1; Wesley, 0. St. Luke's, 6; University Whippets, lj University, 4; North Shore, 2. SOMERVILLE EXTENDED. TIIO issue of tho game between Somerville and Wesley remained in doubt until very near tho end. The first movement o£ note was an advanco of the Somerville forwards. led by E. and C. , Watts. Wesley obtained relief gh a freo liit, a.ad Smith stopped A. Chappell after he had reached tho circle. Scccombp wag prominent in another Somerville attack, and a shot by Schneideman went past. A. B. Burton led "Wesley back and Somerville had to yield a corner. Roberta narrowly missed scoring. Somerville continued to make the most of tho play, and Wesley's defence was sharply tested. Donovan saved well from 0.11 .attack in which E. Watts had the chief part. From a corner against Wesley, Seecombe took a shot that Donovan stopped. A. M. Burton and J. Chappell eventually cleared from a dangerous position. About this staee ;ui injury compelled E.
