NEGLECTED FOOTPATHS.
Sir, —1 read recently in the Herald thafi it costs tho property owners in Queen Street 6s a square yard for paving tha footpaths outside their premises in permanent concrete blocks, this being con* sidercd by the Auckland City Council to be half tile cyst (12s a square yard). Perhaps it would be interesting to macy of your readers to learn that the Onehunga Borough Council called tenders, just bafor>; last Christmas, for concrete paving in Trafalgar Street. The specifications called for blocks 4ft. by 4ft., 2in. thick, composed .of four parts of £in. chips and 2j parts of saiid to 1 part of Wilsonito cement, which is a dearer cement than ordinarily used. This work, some 721 square yards, was lpt for 4s 8d a square yard, everything to be found by the con. tractor. The work was performed in record time and can be seen by any inter* psjed person. It would seem that tha City Council would make a handsom# profit if it called for tenders, instead of keeping in flio same old groove of al] its own work by day labour. If tenders were called for paving our footpaths in concrete slabs the ratepayers would bo agreeably surprised, and our footpaths would soon be a credit to the city instead of being a disgrace, at at present.
