THEFTS FROM HOUSES.
RINGS WORTH £7O STOLEN.
MO.UNT ALBERT HOMES VISITED
Three houses at the corner of Asquith Avenuo and Maybeck Road, Mount Albert, were visited by a thief on Friday evening and two diamond rings valued at £7O were stolen from one of them. , The thief operated, with considerable daring, as the occupants were in two of the houses at the time and lights were burning in several of the rooms. Shortly after 7 o'clock, Mrs. M. May, of 15, Maybeck Road, heard footsteps near tho house, and later the sound of a casement window rattling. Her daughter went to the front of the house to investigate, and sho heard a man bursting through shrubbery in the garden. The window of the room was open, but nono of tho contents had been disturbed.
The occupants of ihe adjacent house, that of Miss L. Solomon, at 27, Asquith Avenue, wero playing cards at this time. Miss Solomon had occasion to go to her room, and sho found that her handbag was missing from the dressing table. A search was made round the house, but no traco of the intruder could be found. However, tho handbag was picked up in Mrs. May's garden. It contained a few shillings, which had not been removed.
Tho theft of tho rings, from the residence of Mr. 1). McDowell, of 23, Asquith Avenue, was discovered on Saturday. Thero was no one at home on Friday afternoon and until late on Friday evening. Tho rings wero removed from a wardrobe in a front room, and were tho most valuable of several placed together. Tho thief evidently entered by casement windows which lead to a sleeping porch.
