GRASS FIRE MENACE.

SECTIONS WITHOUT OWNERS.

POSITION AT NEW LYNN.

COUNCIL TAKING PRECAUTIONS. The danger of fire among noxious weeds growing 011 unoccupied sections has been engaging tlie attention of the New Lynn Borough Council. .It is staled that three outbreaks have occurred recently in which houses havo been endangered. The owner of ono of tho houses has complained to tho council that 0110 fire on a vacant section had been extinguished only with tho greatest difficulty. Hie council is in the position of being unable to order that tiio weeds should be cut. since there are several sections the owners of which cannot bo found. Most of these sections were brought under the jurisdiction of the council upon the formation of tho borough, when an area, formerly included in tho Waitemata county, was added to tho borough. Until these sections havo been included in the borough for a period of three years the council will be unable to sell them.

In the meantime, tho council is taking tlie precaution of clearing those areas in which tho danger is most serious, but since the owners of tho sections cannot bo found the cost must be borne by the council.
