[PLAN FOR AFFORESTATION

MAORI ASSOCIATION'S AIM.

The afforestation of native lands, unsuitable for agricultural purposes, providing .work tor the owners and other Maoris, and the provision of means to check indigent Maoris from gravitating from tho land to the cities, are being sought by the Akarana'-Maori Association. A deputation from the association will wait upon tho-Minister of Native Affairs, Sir Apirana • Ngata, on his next visit to Auckland. Areas of land, regarded by the association as suitable for afforestation are (.hose at Te Kao, North Auckland, inland from Whangarei, and the Rangitoto-Tuhtia land in tho King .Country. Sand-dune country is also being considered for inclusion in the'scheme. Maoris have been successfully employed on plantation, tobacco growing and afforestation work in. the North Island, .and tho proposal, tho association considers, would provide welcome labour for Maoris.

A sub-committee has been appointed by tho association to select further historic Maori names for streets in the new suburb of Orakei. The association is engaged on tho matter under an arrangement with the Government.

The association is considering the possibility of the representation of the Maori race at the uext Pan-Pacific Conference of .Women.
