TAURANGA INTERESTS.
BOROUGH'S SOUND FINANCES POWER FOR FLAXMILLING. [BY TELEGRAPH! —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] TAURANGA, Thursday. A very sound position in regard to the past year's finances was disclosed in a statement submitted by the Mayor, Mr. B. C. Robbins, to a meeting of the Tauranga Borough Council last evening. It was stated also that the rates levied totalled £BBB9, and the amount collected equalled 98.3 per cent, of that total. Tlio Mayor indicated that the electricity acI count \vs in a very satisfactory position, but sa'.i the figures were not yet available.
The inspector reported that the value of building permits for the past year to March 31 was £36.499, a considerable increase on the average of the previous three years.
Tho council adopted the recommendation of the Electricity Committee that a reduction of 20 per cent, be allowed to the Power Board on current used for flaxmilling. It was stated .that a similar reduction would be made by. the Power Board. The reduction is made on account of the state of the flaxmilling industry.
A report by tlie engineer stated that the metalling and bituminising work on the Tauranga-Matamata main highway had been completed, and thero was only six chains to finish on the TaurangaWailii highway. It was decided to apply to the ValuerGenera] for a revaluation of the borough. The county clerk forwarded a statement showing the apportionment of heavy traffic fees as follows:—Te Puke Town Board, £116; Tauranga Borough Council, £146; Tauranga County Council, £321.
It was stated that the director of towh planning has telegraphed asking if May 12 would be a convenient date to commence the inquiry by the Town Planning Board in Tauranga, and that the town clerk had replied in tho affirmative. . An application by the manager of Tauranga Theatres, Limited, to screen pictures on Good Friday was refused.
