DAMAGES FOR LIBEL.
TAXI DRIVER'S ACTION. SUM OF £SO AWARDED. [lsY TEtJiOUAPH. —1-KESS ASSOCIATION. ] CIIIUSTCJIURCH, Thursday. A claim for £2OO damages for an alleged libel, made by George William Good go, n taxi-driver, against Sun Newspapers, Ltd., was heard in the Magistrate's Court tiy Mr. Young, S.M., to-day. The chsu arose out of the report of a by-law prosecution, in which Ooodge was fined 5s for lieiug asleep in a taxi. The statement complained of was: "Tired taxi-drivers are evidently one of the products of competition among taxis in Christchurch at, present. George Goodge may not have been out on the booze on November 18, but ho certainly was asleep in his cab on the railway station stand, so Mr. E. 1"J. Mosley, S.M., iinod him 5s and costs for the offence."
Counsel for plaintiff said that defendants had already paid £SO into Court. IJo submitted that the full amount should bo awarded, as plaintiff had suffered considerably from the publication of the statement, which was unwarranted and was due to a desire for sensationalism. Ilis client was temperate in his habits and the question of liquor had never been mentioned in the original case. Judgment was given for plaintiff for tho amount paid into Court,
