CONVICTION OF, MECHANIC. "MOTOR-CARS HIS DOWNFALL." "Motor-cars are his downfall," said Detective-Sergeant Kelly, when Francis Grantham Carlton Italph, aged 23, a mechanic, appeared in' tho Police Court yesterday on a, chargo of obtaining nine gallons of motor spirit and a quart of oil, of a total v:>lu« of £1 5s 3d, from Francis Morgan at Molu on January 23, by falsely representing that he was in the employ of a garage at Tokomaru Bay. Ralph admitted the offence. The. detective sergeant said accused had been employed at a works at Otalnilui, v,hern ho had been in. receipt of £4 7s 6d u week. He had been induced by other employees to buy a motor-car, and they were to allow him 6s a week to drive them to their work. Shortly afterwards ho injured His hand and was thrown out of work. He decided to go to Tokomaru Hay. On tho journey, at Motu ( ho ran out of benzine, and went to complainant, from whom lie obtained motor spirit and oil by false representations. The probation officer, Mr. W. J. Campbell, recommended that accused should bo medically examined, and ho was remanded for a week for sentence,
