ASTRONOMICAL SOCIETY.
ACTIVITIES IN AUCKLAND. The annual meeting of the astronomical section of the Auckland Institute was held in the University Science Buildings last evening. The following officers were elected: —Patron, the Mayor, Mr. G. Baildon; president, Professor P. W. Burbidge; vice-president, Mr. A. G. Lunn<t hon. auditor, Professor H. W. Scgar; hon. secretary and treasurer, Mr. E. G. Jones; committee, Messrs. J. P. Artha, G. Knight, X. H. Good and P. Chambers. The annual report stated that the membership of the society was now 40. The full programme had been carried out during the year, all the meetings being well attended by the general public and members. The balance-sheet showed a credit balance amounting to £22 125,-in-cluding £22 as the nucleus of a building fund. The society expressed its indebtedness to the-University Council and Professor Burbidge for the use of the university telescope and a lecture room. At a public meeting following the annual nieo.ting Mr. Artha contributed a lecture "Notes on the New Planet." He said he had calculated that the new planet would rank fifth in point-of size to existing planets. Mr. E. G. Jones in a lecture on "Astronomy at the South Pole" pointed out the value of astronomy to Polar explorers.
