EGGS FROM COOL STORE.

BREACHES OF REGULATION. LEGAL ACTION TO BE TAKEN. Allegations made at a meeting of the Auckland Egg Export Committee that large quantities of eggs from cool store were being released for sale without being stamped "chilled ' were brought by a deputation yesterday before the notice of Dr. T. .1. Hughes, medical officer of health at Auckland. The deputation consisted of Mr. E. C. Janett, Government poultry instructor and grader fur Auckland, and Messrs. 11. A. .T. Edgley, B. Turner, F. 11. Wells arid V. A. Ryder.

The deputation asked that the regulation contained in the Food and Drugs Act, of 1924 that "no person shall sell any eggs for human consumption which have been in cold storage for a longer period than ten weeks, unless the eggs are stamped 'chilled'," should be, enforced.

Dr. Hughes gave an assurance that legal proceedings would be taken where breaches of the regulation were detected. He also said the department would seek the co-operation of the Agricultural Department in the enforcement of the regulation.

The regulation providing for stamping "chilled'' eggs was introduced before the Poultry Act was passed, and with other matters relative to the supervision of eggs for market, its enforcement is tho c«uo of the Health Department. Tho New Zealand Poultry Association is endeavouring to have, the authority for the supervision of eggs vested iu the poultry division of tho Agricultural Department. Dr. Hughes stated yesterday that, personally lie was in favour of the association's proposal

PREPARATIONS FOR EXPORT. EXTENSIVE EXPERIMENTS. Advice has been receiver' by tlie Egg Export Committee from the High Commissioner in London and from tho Government. analyst, that a portion of the eggs exported from Auckland to England last year arrived in an unsatisfactory condition. The committee is waiting for further advice from the Government. with a view to ascertaining the cause and obviating the fault in the future. It is presumed that the unfavourable condition was due to the changes of temperature undergone by the eggs during transit before being shipped. Experiments with eggs packed in cartons and wooden crates are being carried out by the committee. The eggs have been stored in the freezer since November and records are being • taken of the condition of the various grades of export, eggs. Members are making individual investigations of samples and reports are to be regularly made. Extensive tests of eggs in the interest of the poultry industry have been conducted by Mr. E. C. Jurrett, tho Government, poultry instructor and grader for Auckland.
