OTTAWA, April 8

Mr. James Malcolm, Minister of Trado and Customs, to-day informed a deputation representing tho lumber interests of British Columbia that Canada is ready to negotiate a complete oxchango of preferences with Australia. Tho matter would be fully discussed with Mr. J. E. Fenton, Australian Minister of Trado and Customs, when 'ho visits Ottawa on his way homo from tho Naval Conforenco.

. Mr. Malcolm hinted that preliminary negotiations are now in progress. Action was particularly sought in regard to Canadian lumber.

Tho deputation told the Minister that the recent trip to Australia of lumbermen had shown that that country is heartily in favour of extending trado within tho Empire on a fair basis. Mr. Malcolm said his predecessor, tho late Mr. J. A. Robb, two years ago had expressed full accord with the proposal for full preferences botwoen the two countries.

Tho delegates suggested that tho Government should establish Canadian credits in Australian banks to facilitate tho present financial conditions in Australia. Tho visit to that country had shown tho wisdom of sonio such arrangement. Also it had shown a decided desire on the part of Australia for Canada to import Australian wines, which appeared to bo decidedly reasonable and possible.

LONDON WOOL SALES.

MARKET REMAINS FIRM,

LONDON. April 8

At tho London wool sales to-day 4994 bales wore offored, including 839 from New Zealand. Approximately 4090 wero sold.

Tliero was a fair selection of greasy Merinos and a limited offering of greasy crossbreds, Tho market was firm at lato rates, which wero fully maintained.

NEW ZEALAND BUTTER.

CANADIANS' ATTITUDE

Tho Agricultural Committee of tho Provincial Legislature of Now Brunswick today carried a resolution that Now Zealand butter should bo subjected to an increased duty in order to stimulate tho industry in Now Brunswick and other sections of Canada. E., S. AND A. BANK. DATE OF INTERIM DIVIDEND. Tho half-yearly intorim dividend of tho English, Scottish and Australian Bank will bo payablo on May 1, Tho books will close on April 23. Tho rate of tho dividend has not yob been announced. Tho last annual dividend and bonus, totallod per cent.
