VETERAN GOLFER.
NO MORE CHAMPIONSHIPS. DECISION OF J. H. TAYLOR. (Received March 19, 6.15 p.m.) LONDON, March 19. J. H. Taylor, who is now 59, has decided not to play again in championship golf. He says it is the turn of the younger men. James Braid and Harry Vardon have not yet made a similai decision.
Taylor, Braid and Vardon were known as the "great triumvirate" of golf in their palmy days. Taylor, who was 59 yesterday, was born in Devon. He won the open championship in 1894 and again in 1895, 1900, 1909 1913, and tied with Harry Vardon in 1896. He was runnerup on four occasions. He has won the French find German open championships, and in 1900 was second in the American open to Mr. W. J. Iravis. He has won many challenge matches, and played for England on many occasions. His favourite shot is the approach with a mashie. He is a partner in a firm of coif course architects and designers. In a famous match in 1905, for .£2OO a-side, Taylor and Vardon (England) defeated Braid and Alex. Herd (Scotland), by 13 up and 12 over four links, St. Andrews, Troon, St. Anne's and Deal. James Braid is now 60 years old. He was born in Fifeshirc, and won the open championship in 'l9Ol, 1905, 1906, .1908 and 1910. He was second in 1897, 1902, 1904 and 1909. He won the French open in 1910. He has played for Scotland and Britain v. America. Harry Vardon, one of the most stylish of players, was born in Jersey in 1870. He has won the opeii championship six times, in 1896, 1898, 1899, 1903, 1911 and 1914, and was runner-up four times. _ He has played for England, and for Britain v America. He has written Hie Complete Golfer" and "How to Play Golf." His favourite club is the cleek.
