OVERCOME BY GAS.
THREE WORKMEN KILLED, TRAGEDY AT HULL. Three mon were fatally gassed and twelve others overcome while working on the site of a new cemetery in Hull recently. Tho victims were Messrs Alfred Dunn, Charles Purcell and Walter Currie. The men, employees of Hull Corporation, were about to descend into a sump connected with the drainage when they encountered gas. Mr. William Royes, tho first to go down, was forced back by gas, but managed to escape. Messrs Dunn, Purcell and Currie, who had followed him, immediately collapsed at the bottom of the sump. A cry for help brought other workmen to tho scene, but immediately they approached they were driven back by the gas, and for a time they could not reach the unconscious men, 15 feet below. Tlioy then protected themselves as well as they could against the fumes, and gallantly entered the sump hole with ropes, which they fastened round the three men, who were, pulled to the surface.
