The launch Dione returned early last evening, her cockpit presenting a scene of wreckage, where a mako shark had jumped pn board. Mr. A. Bowyer, who was in the chair, had a strike and before the engine could be started the fish broached alongside three times, each time clearing the water by fifteen feet. The third time it landed right in th 6 chair on its nose. The angler had barely time to escape. "The chair was broken to matchwood, several pieces showing broken teeth embedded in the wood. The panelling va3 badly damaged and a heavy gunmetal control lever was broken. Mr. Bowyer managed after a desperate struggle to kill tho fish with a whale spade. The fish weighed Mr. Bowyer also landed another mako .weighing 2901b. The catching of the first fish provided the most oxciting experience ho has had, spread over 50 odd years of deep sea work. Others catches yesterday were:—Mr. jW. R. Roe, launch Ethel, mako, 1111b; Mr. E. Watson, Alma G., mako, 3581b., and 1391b; Mr. Arnott, Lorna Doonc, mako, 2451b. swordfish, 2191b.
