AKARANA CLUB'S RACES.

FOUR . GENERAL HANDICAPS.

A CHAPTER OF MISHAPS.

Four general handicaps and a race for the Star class were held by the Akarana Yacht Club cm Saturday afternoon. The schooner Valkyrie was used as flagship and was moored south of the compass dolphin in Judge's Bay. A fresh breeze from the north was blowing and there was a heavy roll in Rangitoto Channel.

A number of' mishaps were recorded. The 22-footer Venus carried away her backstay at the start of her race; the 14ft. bout Mario parted her peak halliards; the Rahiri broke her bowsprit; the Moa split her jib; and the June blew out her mainsail. In each 6tise the boats were compelled to retire. Only the • Kenya put in an appearance in the race for launches and the

event was cancelled. The officials in charge of the racing ,vero:—Starter, Mr. G. Miller; judge, Mr. G. Grimmer; timekeeper, Mr. T. McKnight; recorder, Mr. G. E. Laycock. An At Home' was hold ashore at the clubhouse and a d;ince took place in the evening. The club hold its annual picnio at Brown's Island yesterday. Details of the racing are as follow:

Win :tor lona. The race for keel yachts for the Commemoration Cup was started at 2.35, Gloriana crossing the line first, closely followed by lona, Scout, Pandora, Windward and Iris. On the boat to the Channel Scout took the lead, but was passed by lona at North Head. Windward and Scout were now nyvk-

ing a close race and there was little between them Approaching the Duder Spit buoy where "Windward replaced Scout. The Order rounding the buoy was:—lon a, "Windward, Scout, Iris, Gloriana. Pandora retired off Cheltenham Beach. The boats had a flat run in from Duder's Spit to the Bastion and then , a lead to the finishing line. lona

was smart with her spinnaker and increased her lead from Windward, which did not get her light sail. The finishing times were:—lona, 4h 16m 48s; Windward, 4h £2m 2s; Scout', 4h 22m 325; Iris, 4h 31m sis; Gloriana, 4h StSm 255. Result: lona, 1; Scout, 2; Iris, 3. -i There were seven starters in the race for classes H, L.and N for the Captain G. H. White Cup. At gunfire Rakoa was first

away and next to her came Oinalere, Huia, Venus, Why Not, Starlight and Doreen in that order. Venus was crowded on to tlia compass dolphin and, breaking her backstay, retired. Starlight took the lead shortly after the start and kept it throughout. All the boats worked the Rangitoto shore and after rounding the' green light buoy were able to fetch thfe Duder Spit buoy, most •of them overlaying their mark. At the green light the order was Starlight, Omatere, Rakoa, Why Not, Huia, Doreeri. All were close to one ailo.thar except Doreen, which was a long way astern. There was no . further change in the positions of the boats for the remainder of the course and the finish was timed:—Starlight, 4h 26m 475; Omatere, 4h 34m 2Js; Rakoa, 4h 37m 8s; . Why Not'. 4h 38m 325; Huia. 4h 42m 40s; Doreen, 4h 52m 7a. Result: Huia, 1; Star- | light, 2; Why Not, 3. Success of Manene.

The race for the He-tr-lin Cup, classes : M, V and S, saw nine boats face the starter. Manene led the way over the line and close on her stern came Ranui. Mawhiti, Namu, "Wild Wave, Waitoa and Bungaree. Rangitira and Secret followed some seconds later. Mawhiti was in cha:rge until just before the i completion of, the first .round when she ' was passed by Manene. Some minutes later came Ranui. Namu, Wild Wave, Waitoa, Rangitira, Bungaree. Secret retired at this . stage. The two M boats drew away from the others in the second jjrouncl and the finish was timed:—Manene, 4h 7m 575; Mawhiti. 4h 8m 263r Ranu\, 4h 17m 14s; Natau, 4h 17m 16s; Wild Wave, 4h 19m 555; Rangitira. 4h 27m 555; Bungaree, 4h 28m ; 225. Result: Manene, 1; Mawhiti, 2; Namu, 3. | Shalimar, led»the way over the line in | the race for classes T and Y for the club I cup. Rarnona- was a second' away with Lois, Cupid, Opah,. Marie and Rahiri 11. i handy. Resolute was 10m late. Marie car- [ ried away-'" her' peak halliards soon after the

start and Rahiri 11. fouled the compass dolphin, carrying away her bowsprit. Lois and Shalimar fought out a close race right round the course. Jjoi3 had a lead from Shalimar and Opah on the completion of the first round. In the second Shalimar passed Lois, but when .within a few lengths of the finishing line Lois shot ahead, beating her rival "in" by one second. The finishing times' were:—Lois. 4h 12m 225; Shalimar, 4h 12m 235; Opah, 4h 15m 545; Ramona, 4h 19m 37a. Cupid and Resolute did not finish. Result: Shalimar, 1; Lois, 2; Opah, 8.

The three star class boats Moa, Maid Marion and June sta.rted in that order in the race fpr' the Brett Cup. Moa blew out her jib soon after tins utart, but continued the race. June went into the lead and was a long way in front of the other two boats on reaching Resolution, buoy. This mart she unfortunately omitted,- rounding the compass < dolphin instead. Meanwhile Maid Marion and Mtia rounded Resolution and June put back, -following the other two round the correct buoy. In the second round June blew out hej: mainsail and retired. The finishing times were: Maid Marion. 4h 60m 295: Moa, 4h 51m 255. Result: Moa, 1. The third of thei series of races for a cup presented by ■ the headquarters of the Star class fin Nevr York was sailed in conjunction "with the Akarana Club's event. Maid Marion, won this trophy with eight points, Moa securing six points.

j COMBINED MANUKAU CLUBS.

RACES' TO CORNWALLIS

The Manukau Cruising and Yacht Clubs combined and held cruising races to Corntvallis on Saturday afternoon. _ The weather 'during the morning did not nold out much promise of- wind, but at the turn of the tide the breeze increased, and, coming from the north at the utart, caused several to reef down for the long run .home.- _ The yachts were seat away at 2.30 i).m. in the iollowing order':—Sylvia, Se& Toiler, Nyria. Sea Horse, Janet, Drone, Aoma. Wild Wave and Miss Mac were late. After crossing, the Nyria soon took the lead and opened up a big break. Rounding the Horn, spinnakers wore set, the Sylvia catching the N.vria, only to be passed' by the Aoma off Blockhouse. The breeze slackened somewhat.' and reefi were shaken out, but the positions were not altered much, the finish being timed as follows, the Crilißing Club's handicaps being given first when two are mentioned:—Aorna, .scr, 3h 51m 51s; Sylvia, 2m, 3h 52m 30s; Nyria, 10m-14m, 3h 53m 425; Sea Horse, 9m, 3h 54m 325; Sea ■Toiler. 20m. 3h 56m 245; Janet, 18m. 4h lm 50s; Drone, ecr-scr, 4h 2m 19s; Wild Wave, 20m-16m, 4h 11m 40s; Miss Mac, 12m, 41) 25m 445. , ~ Corrected times gave the following placings:— . Manukau Cruising Club.—Nyria, 1; Sea Horse, 2; Sylvia. 3. _Manukau Yacht Club.—Sea Toiler. 1; K.vria, 2; Janet, 3. . In the power event, five boats were despatched at 2.45 p.m. The ebb tide proved a big help to the boats, and some fast times were registered. The order crossing the line was Elma, Ramona, Hinemoa, Rainbow and Cremorne. The Elma took the lead, closely followed by the Rainbow and Hinemoa, witli the Ramona .and Cremorne astern. The Rainbow passed the Hinemoa a few yards from the finish, which was timed. Cruising Club handicaps being given first:—Elma, 28m-29m, fh 42m 20s: Rainbow, 22m 27Jm, 3h 10m 30s; Hinemoa. 27m, 3h 43m 40s; Cremorne, 40Jm Eh 51m 30s; Ramona. 49m-55m, 4h 0m 455. Corrected times placed' the boats as follows :
