CRUISE OF DISCOVERY.
~ MARINE RESEARCH WORK, [ LARGE VARIETY OF FISH. CANBERRA. F,eb. 5. • 'A copyright wireless message from Sir Douglas Mawson, dated January ,28, states: "In the last few days vre have been busy running the marine section in full detail, as wo have proceeded northward from the Enderby Land coast into ' • the deep' basin oi the Southern Ocean. -- " To-day we are in latitude 63 degrees 50. minutes south, longitude 54 degrees 16 minutes east. Operations have been •carried out in water 53 to 54 metres •deep. A special feature has been the "richness in-the nekton (small swimming "organisms) of the waters 1000 metres vbelow the surface, where a large variety .'of fish have been netted.'. Some are quite extraordinary in form. " Blue whales are abundant, and icc:bergs are also plentiful,. but show the -"effects of warmer waters, being reduced .from , tho compact, tabular forms of the •continental shelf region to spired and turret ed shapes, often of striking grandeur. "One such has just" passed. We measured * 31y and found it to bo 250 foot high."
