UNEMPLOYED PEOPLE.

INCREASE ON LAST YEAR.

DISCUSSION IN COMMONS.

(Received February 4, 6.15 p.m.) LONDON, Feb. 3. On the motion for the third reading of the Consolidated Fund Bill in the House of Commons, Sir Arthur SteelMaitland, Conservative member for Tamworth, raised the unemployment problem. He s.aid the nvfinber of people out of work now was higher than at any period for seven years and nearly 50,000 moro than last year. Mr. J. H. Thomas, Minister in Charge of Unemployment, admitted that the registered figures were worse. Moreover, he said, at least 100,000 must be added at the end of the month by reason of the operation of the new Unemployment Insurance Bill.

' However it was a profound mistake to magnify the figures. Businessmen had told him that this false impression was doing incalculable harm. Sir Herbert Samuel, Liberal member for Darwin, pleaded that this was a national emergency. Both sides should be summoned to the aid of the Government. He asked how far Mr. Thomas had proceeded with his plans for Empire Development. The bill was read a third time.
