THEFTS OF SHEEP.
PROPOSED PRECAUTIONS.
"BIG ORDER" FOR DEALERS.
That thero was considerable unrest among sheep farmers in some districts over tho unauthorised removal• of ■, sheep, especially by lorries by night, was a statement mat'lo by tho Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Farmers' Union, Mr. J. Pow, in a letter read at a meeting of tho Manawatu sub-provincial executive the other day. "Th.cre is at present no legislation preventing the removal of sheep by motor-lorries at night, consequently legislation will have to be introduced ne:;t session making such removal of sheep illegal except by permit," the writer added.
Mr. J. T. Kent said it was recognised that there was a considerable amount of sheep-stealing going on. Tho difficulty was in tracing the sheep, which were sold in variouii salcyal'ds. Mr. B. G. (lower: I do not think they would sell the stock in a saleyard. The chairman, Mr. 0. P. Lynch, cited several c;jses of theft that had comft under his notice. Mr. Kent said ho considered that auctioneers should state the names of vendors of all sheep sold/ Tho Chairman: A man that will steal stock will ncjt give a bone-fide name to the auctioneers.
Mr. Kent moved as a remit to the provincial conference '.'that owing to tho amount of stock stealing, auctioneers be compelled to name tho vendor of stock, and that the vendor be compelled to name the person from whom be purchased such stock," Mr. Gower: That will be a big order for some of the dealers. The remit was approved.
