CIVIL ENGINEERS' EXAMS.
Sir, —In your . issue of last Saturday complimentary reference was made to the training of civil engineers in New Zealand, as witnessed by their success in the examinations of the Institution of Civil Engineers (London). While warmly endorsing the compliment, I should like to suggest that tho number of trainees for the jjrofession of civil engineering is considerably in excess of our requirements. The figures quoted showed that six New Zealanders pjissed the whole exam., as against seven for the rest of tho Empire, while in partial passes 47 out of a total of 339 belonged to this country. The population of this country is approximately 2 per cent, of that of the white population of the Empire, and one does not need to be a mathematician to interpret tho warning given. Youths just leaving school and their parents should examine "the results quoted carefully before making up their minds on the choice of a profession. Chartered Civil Engineer.
