ANIMALS IN CAPTIVITY.
Sir, —Regarding birds and animals kept in close captivity. Cannot something be done to end this cruel, selfish and barbarous practice ? God made the birds "to fly in tho open firmament of heaven," not to be cramped behind bars with scarcely room to spread their wings, let alone fly. Go to any zoo and see the hunted look of anguish in the animals as they pace to and fro, the majority in a climate unsuited to their natures. Surely the exhibits of animals and birds in tho museum should be sufficient for the education of children. In any case, it does not justify education at the expense of suffering which is tho refinement of cruelty. Also, tho enormous sums spent in purchase and upkeep could be much better employed. Glan Aber.
