INCREASE IN REVENUE.
WESTERN RECLAMATION. PROGRESS OF THE WORK. A satisfactory increaso in tlio revenue earned by the Auckland Harbour Board during the three months ended December 31 was disclosed in the reports presented at the monthly meeting of the board yesterday. The chairman, Mr. M. H. Wynyard, presided.
Cash receipts under revenue headings for December, 1929, amounted to £33,987, an increase of £4367, compared with December, 1928. The schedule for the three months to December 31 showed an increase of £11,817 upon the corresponding period of 1928. Tho receipts for the three months amounted to £106,682 and were £7160 in excess of the proportion of tho year's estimates for tho period. Receipts from tho Manukau Harbour for December, 1929, amounted to £554, a decrease of £lOl. The schedule for the three months showed a decrease of £331.
Reporting upon the western reclamation tho engineer, Mr. D. Holderness, stated that for tho three months ended January 6 the total filling from all sources, as determined by levels and soundings, was 57,500 cubic yards, making a total to that date of 680,291 cubic yards, or 80 per cent, of tho total required. During the eight weeks since last report the dredge Hapai had removed 51,180 cubic yards of spoil from St. Mary's Bay boat harbour area at the approach to the slipway. On the western section of tho viaduct to Freeman's Bay pile-making had been commenced. Pile-driving would commence on February 30. Minor works in tho completion of the eastern section were being pushed on. The Railway Department advised that it was desirous of acquiring a small area of land owned by tho board at Campbell s Point for improving the eastern entrance to the locomotive depot and asked whether tho board would raise any objections. The mattor was referred to tho Binanco Committee to report to the board-in-com-mittec.
An application from the Auckland Winter Exhibition Committee for the use of tho wharf sheds for the next winter exhibition, proposed to be held early in July, was referred to tho board-in-com-mittee.
Tho usual donation of £25 was voted to the funds of the Auckland Anniversary Regatta. A request for a donation was also received from tho Manukau Yacht and Motor-Boat Club for the purpose of sending a crew (o compete in the Cornwell Cup contest to bo held in Dunedin on February 18. "The board has never made a special grant to any particular club and although the, cause is a deserving one it would establish a dangerous precedent to do so now," said Mr. Wynynrd, in moving that no action be taken. The motion was carried.
