ALLEGED THEFT OF COWS.
DRURY DROVER ON TRIAL.
'A charge of stealing two cows, valued at £2O, the property of William "Victor Bremner,. farmer, of Drury, and an alternative charge of receiving were preferred against David Henry Mehaffy, drover, of Drury, in the Supreme Court yesterday, before Mr. Justice Herdman and a jury. [Accused, who was not represented' by counsel, pleaded not guilty. Arthur Lawrence Learning, manager of Mr.' Bremner's, farm, said that one of the cows was a black Holstein and the other a light red colour with patches of white. Witness last saw the cows on August 16 and on the following day, they, with some heifers, were missing. The tieifers were found waiting at the gate of the farm, but search on the farm and inquiries at neighbouring farms and along the roads failed to reveal the whereabouts of the cows. Accused was questioned and said that he had not seen them. On December 7 witness examined the herd on Mr. V. S. Dewar's farm, Karaka, and found a cow answering to the description of the missing Holstein cow. James Terenco White, farmer, of Paerata, said that about August 24 accused took two cows, one a black Holstein and the other with brown and white patches, to his farm with a request that he should graze them for some time. Both cows were forward in calf. The cows i were left on the farm until September 12, \ which was a sale day at Pukekoho. Ac- i cused then called and took them away. At this stage tho trial was adjourned Cntii this morning.
