THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE. INCREASE IN BUSINESS. Business- on the Auckland Stock Excliaugo vesterday was a little nioic brisk, and inquiry in several sections of the market improved. A healthier demand existed for Government investments. War Loans, 1939, <U per cent., had salo at £99 ss. A similar issue of Inscribed Stock was done at the same price, and in each instance buyers remained in the market at £99.

A slightly stronger tone was apparent in banks, which wore more firmly held. Two sales of rights in the now issue of Commercials of Australia, which advanced from Is 3d to Is 6d, was tho only business done. A lalo sale on Monday of Commercial Bank shares was recorded at 22s 6d, an advance of 2d, which was tho closing offer of buyers yesterday. A similar transaction was recorded in New South Wales, which were done at £3B 8s 6d on tho Melbourne register. Yesterday tho local market was unchanged with buyers offering £3B and sellers asking £3B 10s, In insurance both New Zealands and South British were slightly weaker. Wider" inquiry was made in the loan and agency group. Offers for GoldsbroughMorts improved 9d to 30s 9d without rosponso from sellors. National Mortgage and Agency woro quoted, ox rights, at 81s 6d, but buyers did not offer._ In gas Aucklands were actively dealt in at the lower levels following tho payment of tho dividend. Two sales were registered one penny easier at 23s Bd, with a subsequent' deal at 23s 6d. More were sought at tho same price, sellers 23s Bd. In breweries Now Zealands and Staples returned to favour at lato rates.

In miscellaneous headway was made by British Tobaccos, which were dono 6d better at 40s 6d, after which offers were lifted to 41s, an advance of 9d on Monday's limit. The ordinary issue of Electrolytic Zincs changed hands at 30s, a fall of 3s on the last sale, which took placo beforo the Christinas vacation. Inquiry -was renewed at 29s 9d, but further sellers were hard to locate.

Mining investments were fairly steady and quiet. Moanataiaris, fully paid, were in demand ono penny firmer at Is 9d. Offers were reinstated for the contributing issues. Mount Lyells claimed improved support and wore wanted 9d firmer at 34 s 9d
