THE AUCKLAND EXCHANGE. SMALL VOLUME OF BUSINESS. Trading on tho Auckland Stock Exchange yesterday was light. No pronounced change occurred in tho generally quiet tone of the market, and the principal business was again confined to banking shares. Inquiry in tho giltedged section was a little stronger, Government investments showing a firmer tendency. War Loan, 1938, 4i per cent., advanced 2s 6d with a transaction at £99 10s. In banks, the market opened weaker, but some headway was made by several issues during the day. Commercials of Australia, which were dealt in at 22s 4d, recovered 3d, and Unions of Australia improved Is on tho last Christchurch transaction with a sale at £lO 18s 6d. New Zealands changed hands at tho current price, 54s 9d. In each instance buyers remained in the market at the same figuro. In insurance, New Zealands were inquired for at 425, with sellers asking 435, while for South British buyers dropped to 555, sellers 60s 6d. The dull domand persisted in the loan and agency and the coal sections. In gas, Aucklands had saio ex div. 9d lower at 23s 9d. Sellers quoted 245, buyers 23s 6d. In breweries, Crowns wero wanted ex div. 2s lower at Bs. Little change occurred in the miscellaneous section, which continued to lack buying strength. In several instances offers wero a shade weaker. In mining, Moanataiaris eased, and the fully-paid issuo was done three times 6d cheaper at Is 9(1, with offers of Is 8d for more. Waihi Grand Junctions had sale unaltered at Is 3d. Fordo, says big dovolopments in tho production of power alcohol from niolasses aro ponding in Queensland. It is estimated that tho first factory at Sarina, which will soon bo roady, will prodnco sufficient spirit for tlio whole of Queensland's requirements, roughly something _ oyer 8,000,000 gallons a year. Negotiations aro proceeding for the purchase of the total output of molasses which previously was thrown away.
