ROMAN NOTATION.
1( —X was rather amused at the letters of " Student " and " Roman " in Friday's Hf.rald. I endeavoured to be quite explicit in my last letter. The correct subtractions are unit from 5 or j 10; 10 from 50 or 100; 100 from 500 or j 1000. I can assure " Student" that , had I written XMIX. for 999 at school, , tho urchin in front would again nudge . the next boy, and, with a whisper heard all over the class: " See how ho spells 5 Christmas." In regard to " Roman " ] I would like to state onco more that ( you cannot havo more than three sue- j cessive letters. Ho has suggested cor- j recdv CMXCIX; most incorrectly , DCCCCXCIX., there being four C's. If 400 were required it would be CD. Also, DCD is not 900, but 500 and 400. C.M. is the correct notation for 900, as taught ] by all masters to IM.
