RECORDS AND ROMANCE.
Trying over some new gramophor.e records, a correspondent of an English journal says ho was struck by the beautiful quality of a voice that was ikiw to him. He saw from the inscription thitthe singer was Marguerita Caf-lton. It has been discovered that Marguerita is a young singer who is expected to be a grand opera star within the next few years. Yet not long ago she was almost in danger of dying of starvation, A typist in a provincial office, she succeeded through a friend in getting into the chorus of the Carl Rosa Opera Company. But stage work was infrequent. She actually spent her last penny, and then accepted a position as a domestio servant. A concert party chance came along, and Marguerita obtained a chorus part in "The Vagabond King." She was so weak, however, that she fainted on the stage and was carried into the dressingroom of the star, Miss Winnie Melville.
