OUTSTANDING COMPETITORS,,

BRIDSON IN FINE FORM. [Br TELEGRAM. —OWN CORRESPONDENT. J GREYMOUTH, Friday. Tho outstanding competitors at tho New Zealand amateur swimming cham* pionships which commenced in the Muni* cipal Baths this evening were R. GeddeS and Miss M. Mathieson (Otago), .MisJ K-. Rainey and G. Bridson (Auckland)! and E. McC'onville (Canterbury). In the first race, the 75vds intermediate girls' breaststroko championship, t!i{| Otago girl, ]Miss M. Mathieson, Te(J throughout from Miss J. Webster (Audi* land) to annex tho title in the splendid timo of 64 3-ss, which reduces her ov.aj Dominion record by 2-ss. Chief interest centred in the lOOvrii}, men's championship. Once again it waSan exciting raco. The confidence of Con* terbury supporters was placed in A. T* Stokes, who was expected to fully extend the brilliant, Aucklander Bridson.' ThS two men were together up to about, the 60yds mark, but after that the issue wa« never in doubt, Bridson going ahead to win easily 3vds in the fast, time of 58 l-ss, compared with I. W. Cam* eron's record of 56 4-ss. Stokes madfl a fine showing, being timed to take 61u t which is a little slower than his best, 59 5-ss. Tho other starters, Claridgej and L. Moorchouse, were at their best, but could not getr anywhere near Bridson or Stokes. A great performance, was put .up l>y, the 12-year-old Auckland junior., Edna! Rainev, who captured the 50yds. junior; girls''title in 35 l-ss. This is 3-5s better! than tho record established in Dunedini two years ago by Z. Howarth (Watiga* nui). Inches only separated the placed pirls, so that D. Smith (Ashburton) and E. Strong (Auckland) must have done good times. After his brilliant swimming since iths commencement of the season Bridson'S defeat by Stokes in the • one mile men's championship would have come as a great surprise. Bridson was simply tho Bridson as Aucklanders know him, and swimming a great race without showing any; apparent signs of fatigue "at any stage, ha led throughout, to win finally by 36yds.. from Stokes in 24m 31 3-ss, which 11 16 4-5s outside D. P. Lindsay's record,-
