LOCAL UNEMPLOYED.
GOVERNMENT'S INTENTIONS.
ROAD WORK IN PROVINCE.
LABOUR MEMBER DISSATISFIED. Following upon tho statement issued by the Government on Monday that work would be found by tho Public Works Department lor all men now unemployed in Auckland, a telegram was despatched on Thursday by Mr. W. J. Jordan. M P., to the eflect. that although men had been applying every day, no positions had been forthcoming. Yesterday a reply was received from tho lion. G. VV. Forbes as follows:
''ln reply to your telegram of Thursday, the Labour Bureau has received orders from the Public Works Department for Auckland men to bo placed on relief work. No Government department has any work available at present in Auckland City or environs, and work is being provided on roads in the Auckland Province, with the exception of a certain number of men who are being placed on (ho Gisborno-Wairoa railway. I have perused returns of earnings of co operative parties on road relief work in Auckland district, and these indicate clearly that industrious men ran earn good wages."
Mr. Jordan said that lie did not regard the position as at all satisfactory. Many of the men were not suited for arduous work on the roads, and it was not fair to ask them to leave their homes and take positions in the country. He did not consider that the Government was honouring its proiniso to provide a satisfactory solution of the unemployment problem.
