OBITUARY.

MR. B. D. • HEWETT. A pioneer settler of the Waikato, Mr. Basil Duff Hewett, has died at the Bay of Islands, in his 65th year. Mr. Hewett was the grandson of General Hewett, who saw service during the Indian Mutiny. His father saw service in the Maori War and was shot by a Maori at the close of hostilities. For many years Mr. Hewett was a settler in the Ivihikihi and Waimi districts. He was chairman of the Raglan County Council for several terms. During the war he acted as cable censor at Auckland. The funeral took place at Puwera on Sunday.

MRS. SUSAN BREWSTER t [BY TELEGRAPH. —OWN CORRESPONDENT.] PUKEKOHE, Monday. The death occurred on Saturday of Mrs. Susan Brewster, aged 70 years, widow of the late Mr. Charles Brewster, and a pioneer of the Whangarata district. Tuakau. With her husband she arrived in New Zealand in February, 1881, by the ship British Empire, landing at Auckland. After a few months;' flaxmillirig at Pokeno they took up bush land at Whangarata, which they converted into a farm. Following the death of her husband in 1925, Mrs. Brewster resided at Buckland. She is survived by four sons and three daughters. There are fourteen grandchildren.
