EXCESSIVE TAXATION.

Si rj —I was much interested in the CusLoms returns as presented in Thursday's Herald. Taking the returns for the four chief ports it seems that the Customs revenue for 1929 is just on a million pounds more than for 1928. Why ? What possible excuse can there be for so bleeding the community ? There is still much unemployment and the people are being urged to help to find work for those unemployed. How can they assist when their all is being taken from them in taxes ? If duties were imposed to help the sale of New Zealandmade goods one could understand it. But that would increase employment and decrease Customs revenue. Evidently the policy is the reverse of that. There was a time when the Liberal Party in New Zealand boasted of its free breakfast table and its interest ip the welfare of the workers. Now the cost of living does not seem to concern the party. It is high time we had a revision of the Customs tariff, so that a workingman's wages would go further. Then the workers would have more to spend and there would be more employment for all.
