VEGETABLE CROPS.

POINTS FOR ATTENTION

Conditions still continue favourable for the growth and development of seasonable garden crops. Varieties that have been sown ' with the view of having the crops ready for the Christmas season should still be given careful attention. The success attained naturally depends largely upon the condition of the soil, and the treatment bestowed during the growth of the crop.

In ground tbfct has been well provided with humus, either by the use of stable manure or other decayed vegetable matter, there is not the same difficulty in maintaining healthy growth as'in soils deficient of this essential plant food. Food, of course, all plants must have, and if it cannot be supplied in the form referred to, artificial fertilisers, judiciously applied, are very beneficial. With plants that arc lagging for the want of assistance, manure can be given with advantage. Fresh cow manure makes an excellent manure water if placed in a 'bag and allowed to soak in a barrel of water, and if a little soot is added it will be beneficial. In using artificial manures at this season it is most effective if applied just before rain, and lightly hoed in the soil. Otherwise it is better to apply in a liquid form.
